Students will learn/review SEWING 101 techniques as well as basic handbag construction. Campers will design & sew a small fashion backpack for Spring & Summer, adding a remixed, non-matching wallet. Challenge: no solid fabrics. As in all our classes/camps at TISSU, students will learn the importance of traditional design & techniques, yet push the boundaries to explore their own individuality & unique aesthetic. All supplies included & no experience necessary.
TEXTILE LESSON: cotton, canvas, hardware
YOUTH & TEENS DATE: TUES. 3/20/18 9am-12pm Price: $35
Flowy florals are moody, timeless, romantic & effortlessly chic. Imagine pairing this Spring trend with awesome Japanese design elements. Runway reports reveal everything "JAPONAIS" this Spring - from bright Tokyo city lights & architecture to traditional hand painted textiles to nature-inspired flowers & animals. Challenge: create a wall art piece out of nature-inspired fabric "scraps." What inspires you most about Japan & why? We'll travel across the globe & learn about the culture, textiles, people, food & more. Mochi snacks will also be served. KONNICHIWA.
TEXTILE LESSON: silk, polyester, trims
YOUTH & TEENS DATE: WED. 3/21/18 9am-12pm Price: $35
Calling all eco-minded fashion campers! Learn about fringe, sustainable fabrics & shoe design in this informative fashion camp. We'll discuss the SLOW FASHION MOVEMENT & why it is extremely important to design, make, buy & sell without harming the environment/animals. There are always alternatives (for example, using fake or faux leather instead of real leather). We will also discuss Native American traditions & the significance of moccasins in their daily lives. Campers will utilize critical thinking skills & resourcefulness in this fun & educational class.
TEXTILE LESSON: faux fabric
YOUTH & TEENS DATE: THURS. 3/22/18 9am-12pm Price: $35
Learn how to color block & design a light sweater using saturated, primary hues from the color wheel (think blue, red, hot pink, yellow). Colorblocking is similar to a puzzle - we'll design with basic shapes & interlock fabric pieces together. If you love bright, bold colors & slouchy (yet hip) comfortable sweaters this camp is for you.
TEXTILE LESSON: cotton knits
YOUTH & TEENS DATE: THURS. 3/23/18 9am-12pm Price: $35
In this imaginative & slightly "weird" class, fashion campers will explore the realm of CREATIVITY versus FUNCTIONALITY. Part 1 - Are you a practical, READY-TO-WEAR fashion designer (simple, clean lines, wearable colors) or just the opposite, an AVANT GARDE designer (experimental, abstract shapes, crazy colors)? Students will continue to learn more about their "aesthetic" & what makes them unique & stand out from the crowd. Hint: There is no right or wrong way...just YOUR way!
Part 2: Design & sew a fancy evening gown (for prancing around, fancy photos, just because) or a fancy night gown (for lounging, sleeping like a queen). We will expand on our Kimono cardigan from Tuesday, making it longer, fancier, shinier, more flowy yet comfy & wearable!
Textile lesson: satin, tulle, shiny fabric, cotton
